It’s been over 10 years since I first visited New Orleans (NOLA). I was an intern at the Highlander Center at the time, and had the opportunity to join an amazing caravan of southerners on the road to the Critical Resistance-South conference (I still have my t-shirt from the conference!). It was a fast, but fiercely valuable experience. To learn from the most brilliant prison-abolitionists from across the region was pivotal for me.
Last weekend I had the opportunity to travel back to NOLA, this time with the love of my life. Honestly, at this moment in history, at this point in my life, I can’t imagine a better place to pause and reflect. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing my trip with you—including what we listened to, where we stayed, what we ate, and what we learned. Let’s get started with our playlist! Music is an essential part of my day, especially while traveling. Here are a few favorite tracks from our NOLA road trip.
